The Astronauts

Key Art Concept & Process

Nickelodeon’s The Astronauts take a group of kids on a space adventure as they try to get back home when accidentally launched into space.

Brainstorming

Our original brainstorming and production of this show was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic in early March 2020. When we finally got the green light to continue production we had a lot of obstacles to overcome. First we had to cancel the shoot for the original Key Art idea. With no idea when we could continue, we were asked to pitch alternative ideas using existing set pictures from the episodes and unit photography. Below are some of the comps I created to sell some of our team’s ideas.

Concept 01

CREW EXPRESSIONS

We had a lot of photography on set of the cast in pivotal moments of the series. A first idea of ours was to come up with simple poster ideas of the cast in front of set pieces.

Here are some quick comps we created for reference.

Concept 02

BLAST OFF!

The moment the kids are about to embark on this epic take off, we imagined their faces being a mixture of anticipation and excitement.

We pitched these rough comps showing a close up of our main character Samantha 'Samy' Sawyer-Wei, with hints of the ship she and the crew are traveling in.

CONCEPT 03

WEIGHTLESS

For our third idea we composited some great moments from our unit photography of the kids flying about the ship spine. We composited space and earth view in the background to emphasis the kids not being in a simulator or some space camp imaginative scenario.

Ultimately this idea was chosen and we were green-lit for production. After carefully evaluating safety, our team got the go-ahead for shooting the Key Art.
