KEY ART CONCEPT & PROCESS

Captain Man and Schwoz recruit four children to attend their Swellview Academy for the Gifted, where the new crimefighters-in-training learn to harness their frequently troublesome and sometimes uncontrollable superpowers.

Brainstorming

Our original brainstorming for this show was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When nick got the green light to continue production we had a lot of obstacles. We had no idea if we could safely shoot the key art so we pitched ideas using existing screen grabs from the episodes and unit photography. Below are some of the comps I created to sell some of our ideas.

CONCEPT 01

 SAME DANGER. NEW HEROES

Sprinting into action, the entire team explodes across the image in their superhero costumes (except Schwoz). Captain Man and Schwoz look ecstatic; capable for the challenge ahead, while the kid’s faces are more wild and ridiculous, obvious to whatever calamity they are about to encounter – or possibly, one they are about to create themselves.

CONCEPT 02

SWELLVIEW’S NEW CLASS OF HEROES

The new superheroes in training are presented in action in an over the top funny moment. We see hints of their superpowers but their actions give it away they are not so heroic… yet. Swellview is seen in the background as a nod the HD and the previous series. 

Action/Power Poses

We made some quick in-house comps in order to guide the studio in how we wanted the characters to be layers. When we pitched “Same Danger. New Heroes” we forgot to emphasize that we wanted the art to explode with color. Below are some quick comps we made to convey the powers and personalities of these new superheroes.
